Botcafé is a qualitative instrument for analysing log files that, in the context of art, turns into a painting tool. In the process the number code of an IP address (e.g. 192.168.44.55) becomes the number code of a pixel colour (red = 192, green = 168, blue = 44, transparency = 55). At each mouse click this painting by numbers will leave a brush-stroke at myzel.net. The pages of myzel.net thus serve as a canvas on which searchbots and users will leave traces that construct an image from the top left to the bottom right.

Our concern here is with an art that is brought forth incidentally, as it were, by programs and visitors. In this sense Botcafé signifies an electronic bohemian café at which it is not the identification of users that counts but the white noise of a distributed authorship, not control and supervision but incidental meetings. Botcafé has far more in common with Raymond Roussel's painting machine or Alfred Jarry's pataphysics than with the statistical and analytical methods of mathematics and economics.

Botcafé ist ein Instrument zur qualitativen Analyse von Logdateien, das im Kontext der Kunst zum Medium der Malerei wird. Der Zahlencode einer IP-Adresse (z.B. 192.168.44.55) wird zum Zahlencode einer Pixelfarbe (Rot = 192, Grün = 168, Blau = 44, Transparenz = 55). Dieses „Malen nach Zahlen“ hinterlässt im myzel.net bei jedem Mausklick einen „Pinselstrich“. Die Seiten von myzel.net werden zur Leinwand, auf der Searchbots und User Spuren hinterlassen, die auf der Zeitachse von links oben nach rechts unten ein Bild konstruieren.

Das Interesse gilt einer Kunst, die von Programmen und Besuchern beiläufig hervorgebracht wird. In diesem Sinne ist Botcafé eine elektronische Künstlerkneipe, in der nicht die Identifizierung der Besucher, sondern eine verteilte, rauschende Autorenschaft, nicht Kontrolle und Überwachung, sondern die zufällige Begegnung im Vordergrund steht.
